Welcome

St Michael's Catholic Church

Some Proud Facts:

• The Southern Cross and Kolbe Society were born in the Presbytery.
• St Vincent de Paul Society (established in 1907, fourth in South Africa).
• St Michael's is the Mother Church for Wynberg, Claremont, Athlone, Phillippi, and Matroosfontein.
• St Michael's launches a move to bring all local Church leaders together in dialogue.
• 1995 First Permanent Deacon appointed: Rev Allan Herbert

In the 1930's and until the War intervened, the Parish structure included the Society of St Vincent de Paul, Catholic Womens League (CWL), Cubs, Scouts, Rovers, tennis, badmington and social clubs, amateur dramatics, and the Devereux Choir (which lasted 33 years). And in 1950, a rugby club!
St Michael's has always been a devotional Parish, thanks to the exceptional priests who served long years in the Parish: Frs Griffiths (4), Meagher (28), Kelly (37), Morris (30), Gill (20), and Ruffell (24). The Dominican sisters and Miss Barry taught in the school for 42 years.
In the days before Vatican 11, Masses were daily at 7h30, four or five Masses on Sundays, which had to be completed by 12h00. There was also Benediction and a sermon on Wednesday and Sunday evenings and statins of Fridays with a sermon.
The present St Michael's congregation continue to build on the solid foundation of a rich past.
