In accordance with a custom of the Church, a priest is allowed to accept a stipend for the request of a Mass to be celebrated for a person, living or deceased. The stipend, which is determined by the South African bishops Conference is to increase from R20.00 to R40.00 effective from January 2012. Proceeds go to the parish priest, however if there is more than one request for the intentions of a Mass, the extra stipend is used for the training of Priests.
Mass intentions must be placed well in advance. If you wish to have a card to send to someone advising them of the Mass to be offered, this can be arranged through the Parish Office.
Stipends for Weddings, Baptisms and Funerals The stipend for conducting weddings, baptisms and funerals automatically goes to the parish funds unless specified. Should you wish the priest to receive the stipend please indicate this intention.
However, when a priest is asked to do one of these services for someone outside of the parish, the stipend automatically goes to the priest.
The amount for any of these services will depend on the circumstances and generosity of the parishioner concerned. There are no fixed “fees” as even the poorest should have access to all the sacraments.
