Sacraments

Mass celebration and altar servers

The sacraments are outward, visible signs instituted by Christ to impart God's grace to His people. They are not merely symbolic ceremonies; rather, Christ acts through them to strengthen, heal, forgive, and sanctify believers.

Baptism, the Eucharist, and Confirmation are known as Sacraments of Initiation, since they welcome the believer into the life of the Church, establishing them as a member of the Body of Christ and helping them to grow. Infant Baptisms are available every second Sunday of the month.

The Sacrament of Reconciliation and Anointing the Sick are known as Sacraments of Healing, since they restore our relationship with God and bring physical strength and health.

Holy Orders and Matrimony are known as Sacraments at the Service of Holy Communion, since they build up the church and help others.

All of these sacraments are woven into the life of St Michael’s, with support given to every believer on their journey from baptism onward.

Baptism

Baptism is the basis of the entire Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit and the door that gives access to the other sacraments. Through Baptism, we are freed from sin and reborn as sons of God; we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church and made sharers in her mission: “Baptism is the sacrament of regeneration through water in the word.”

Reconciliation

The Sacrament of Reconciliation is about the mercy of Jesus Christ. Honestly confessing our sins reconciles us with God and restores us to His grace and intimate friendship. Confession breaks the power of shame and the hurt of sin and restores and revitalises our relationships within the community of faith in the life of our Church.

The Eucharist

While Jesus is present in many ways to His Church: in His word, in His Church’s prayer, in the poor, the sick, and the imprisoned, in the sacraments, in the sacrifice of the Mass, and in the person of the minister, he is present most especially in the Eucharistic.  At the moment of consecration, though God’s power, Jesus becomes fully present to us, Body, Blood, soul and divinity.

Christ instructed us to do this in His memory. The Eucharist is the memorial of His Passover and it is Christ himself, who, acting through the priest, offers the Eucharistic sacrifice. In receiving Communion, we increase our union with him, our venial sins are forgiven, and we are preserved from grave sins.

Confirmation

Confirmation is a significant sacrament that confirms a baptized person as a fully mature member of the Catholic Church. This sacred rite involves a new impartation of the Holy Spirit, which strengthens the gifts received at baptism, empowering individuals to live out their faith boldly and actively within the Church community.

Anointing of the Sick

The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick extends a special grace on the Christian of spiritual strength, peace, and courage when facing grave illness or old age.  In addition it provides  for the forgiveness of sins, if the sick person was not able to obtain it through the Sacrament of Penance, the restoration of health, if it is conducive to the salvation of their soul and the preparation for passing over to eternal life.

Marriage

Marriage is a covenant by which a man and a woman form with each other an intimate communion of life and love. The sacrament gives spouses the grace to love each other, perfects their human love, strengthens their unity, and sanctifies them on the way to eternal life.

Holy Orders

Holy Orders is a sacrament through which baptised men are ordained to serve as priests, deacons, or bishops, dedicated to the ministry and leadership of the Church.

LifeTeen and Confirmation (Grade 8 to 12)

Life Teen and Confirmation focuses on the faith formation of pre-teens and teenagers through the Life Teen programme and the Sacrament of Confirmation, helping them to explore and deepen their knowledge of the Catholic faith.

Our goal is to create a safe space in which all our teens feel welcomed, loved, and motivated to build a deeper relationship with our Lord Jesus Christ, to grow in love and depth of faith, and to live lives of integrity in response to God’s calling on their lives, whatever that may be. We are always in search of young, vibrant volunteers to come and assist with bringing the Catechism of the Catholic Church to life. We are active in outreach, fundraising, and youth-related events.

Ages 18 to 35 are encouraged to join the Young Adults. More information can be found on the ministries page.

RCIA (Adults)

Whether you are an interested enquirer or a Catholic seeking to renew your knowledge of the basic tenets of the Faith, RCIA will interest you. RCIA classes are held weekly for a year in the evenings at church.

Through RCIA (the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults), we welcome new members to the Catholic faith and way of life, leading them to an understanding of Catholic doctrine, practices and spirituality. There are four stages in the process, each marked by a ‘rite’, which indicates one’s willingness to move forward to the next stage and learn more. RCIA classes end with a choice of whether or not to become a Catholic, followed by confirmation (or baptism then confirmation) for those who wish to proceed.

Our RCIA classes are highly stimulating, enjoyable and interactive. The emphasis is on getting to grips with the faith, questioning and discussing. RCIA can also be attended by non-Catholic adults interested in finding out more about the Faith or Catholics wishing to refresh their knowledge of it.

Since Vatican II there has been a renewed approach to the methods of communicating our faith. It is more interactive than in the past, with an emphasis on growing together through enquiry and discussion.

Each candidate has a ‘sponsor’, a fully initiated Catholic who travels the road with them. The whole parish community is made aware of the process, with the priest welcoming the candidates during the Mass at different stages of their journey. The congregation is asked to be proactive in prayer for those on their faith journey. This reminds all members that growth in one’s own faith is ongoing and lifelong.

RCIA includes guest speakers and retreats. Classes usually begin in the second half of the year, culminating at Pentecost the following year. However, there is no set time limit – each candidate travels at their own pace.

Marriage & Family

marriage

St. Michael’s seeks to be a place where all feel welcome and where everyone knows that they belong and can join in the faith journey, both receiving support and being a support to others. There really is no such thing as the perfect family, or the perfect parents or the perfect children; families come in all shapes and sizes, and we are all just trying our best!

Marriage Preparation

Marriage preparation off offers sound foundational principles to guide couples navigating this exciting and challenging phase of life.

The Alpha Marriage Course

This course has been of benefit to many couples in our parish over the past few years. Participants meet weekly for eight weeks, beginning with a candlelit supper served by parish volunteers.

Parenting Support

A work in progress. We are hoping to offer a course coordinated by the Archdiocese called ‘Parenting is Heart Work’.  The course, run by a trained team, comes highly recommended.

Inter-Parish Opportunities

Marriage preparation and family support programmes run by the Archdiocese include Engaged Encounter, Marriage Encounter and Retrouvailles. Details of current and upcoming courses can be found on the Archdiocese of Cape Town website, on posters in the church foyer, and in the parish newsletter, as events arise. Taking part in one of these courses allows couples from St Michael’s to go out and meet people from other parishes and from different walks of life to share their understanding of life.
